Police are appealing for witnesses after a burglary at a jeweller in Wallingford yesterday, where thieves smashed the shop’s window.

At 4.18pm, two men stopped outside the MGJ Jewellers in St Martins Street. Both the men were wearing hooded tops and scarves across their faces.

One of the men used a hammer to smash the shop’s window and then removed expensive jewellery from the display.

The men made off from the scene but were pursued by the store’s manager, who chased them along Castle Street where one of them ran into the car park, before losing him.

Det Con Rachel Carter said: “I am keen to hear from anyone who may have seen this offence taking place, or who saw these two men prior to the burglary.

“The manager of the store also thinks there may have been a group of workmen in the car park, who may have seen the man he chased.

“We will not know the value of the items that have been taken until the store undertakes a full inventory, but the jewellery on display was expensive.

“A similar offence occurred on January 15, and I am working on the basis that they are linked.”
