AN ancient Indian form of exercise is uniting generations of people in Barton.

Yoga sessions have been proving a hit on the estate since a trial course was launched earlier this month.

The classes, which are held every Thursday, have proved so popular they look set to be made a permanent feature at the Neighbourhood Centre in Underhill Circus.

Sue Holden, secretary of Barton Community Association, said the idea to teach yoga came from the Barton Therapy Day, an annual event where the community can trial therapies, treatments and classes for £1.

She added: “We had some really good feedback from people about what they would like to see on offer.

“We wanted to put together a fitness regime for the estate and have been holding trial sessions of dance and cardiology “But people of all ages have been coming to the yoga classes. It has proved a real hit.”

Yoga is a form of exercise which involves stretching into a position and holding it while concentrating on certain breathing techniques.

The exercises develop flexibility and muscular endurance by allowing the muscles to be stretched and strengthened.

It is also believed by many to be a deeply spiritual activity.

The classes are being run by Get Oxfordshire Active (Go Active) a programme of activities designed to help everyone lead a more active lifestyle by creating more social and fun activities in the county.

Sue Gristwood, 66, from Stowford Road, said the exercise was a great way of getting people together.

She said: “I think the youngest person there must have been about 17 years old.

“It was really nice to have everyone together.

“Yoga is good because it gets you to use muscles and joints you don’t otherwise think about using.

“It is brilliant for relaxation as well.

“I really enjoy it.”
