OVER-50’s are being offered the chance to take a twirl on the dancefloor.

Oxford City Council, in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council, Age Concern, and Oxfordshire Go Active, is launching city-wide dance classes to encourage residents to keep fit and stay active.

Participants will be able to try out different styles, including contemporary, Brazilian samba, tap and ballet.

Claire Thompson, the city council arts officer responsible for dance and theatre, said: “This is not a one-off, we are looking at it as a starting block for more dance activity.

“It's popular because it’s a fun activity and you can do it at any age.

“It isn't competitive and sometimes going to a gym can be off- putting. It's also an activity that is sociable and it gives people a chance to try out new things. Some people may never have done Brazilian Samba for example, so they can have a go.”

Tap teacher Sarah Stead, 27, said: “I really enjoy teaching adults. There is a more social aspect to it and they are really there to have fun.

“Some of the adults I teach say it is invaluable for them to get out, meet new people and keep themselves active – and it’s very enjoyable to provide that.”

Taster sessions will run at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre from Monday, January 18, to Monday, February 15.

Five more sessions will follow at Temple Cowley Pools and Fitness Centre during March. The classes all run from 10-11am and places cost £1.50. No experience or partners are necessary, nor is a minimum fitness level.

City councillor Bob Timbs, board member for leisure and sport, said: “These dance classes are an excellent way to keep fit and active.

“It will also give people the opportunity to try out lots of different kinds of dance while meeting new people.”
