A man remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital following an incident in Westbury Crescent, Oxford.

At about 3am on Sunday, Thames Valley Police was called to a multi-occupancy house following reports of a disturbance inside and subsequent reports that a man was armed with a knife.

Chief Supt Brendan O’Dowda said: “Police officers arrived at the scene and encountered the man who was threatening to harm police, himself and others. People inside the house were evacuated immediately.

“Officers in attendance attempted to negotiate with the man and eventually a taser was discharged.

“The man was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, with a stab wound to his chest. He has undergone surgery and remains in police custody in hospital.

“The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and post-incident procedures are now in place to provide support for all those involved.

“I would like to reassure the community that the neighbourhood policing team are carrying out patrols in the area and if anyone has any concerns they can contact the team, led by Insp Andy Storey via Thames Valley Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505.”
