SOME of the country’s top DJs have agreed to perform at a charity gig organised by an Oxfordshire cancer patient.

Dean Laidler, 29, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2005 and has undergone major surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.

Despite the cancer spreading to his lungs in 2008, Kennington man Mr Laidler, who works as a DJ locally, has recovered to the degree he no longer receives treatment.

He has now persuaded his DJ heroes, including Danny Rampling, Xpress 2 and John Kelly, to perform at London superclub Ministry of Sound for the DJs vs The Big C event on Sunday, January 31.

Mr Laidler, who lives in Kennington and is a chef at Green Templeton College in Woodstock Road, decided to organise the gig after bowel cancer claimed the life of his friend Lisa Dempsey, whom he met through an online support group.

He said: “It got me pretty down because she was the same age as me, but I decided to do something about it.

“A lot of my friends are DJs as well so we decided to ask all our favourite DJs to help perform at a fundraiser.

“A lot of them were saying no, but through Facebook we were able to message some of them directly and we got people like Danny Rampling saying yes.”

The club agreed to open for free when Mr Laidler and his sister Carla Prosser, an event manager, revealed a list of the big names already signed up.

The gig will run between 2pm and 9pm and 250 tickets have already been sold for the 1,500-capacity event.

More than 3,000 people have also joined a Facebook group publicising the charity gig, and it is hoped £15,000 will be raised for Bowel Cancer UK.

Mr Laidler, who performed a DJ set at Baby Love in Oxford on New Year’s Eve, said: “I am really chuffed to have got a heavyweight like Danny Rampling. I was very surprised he said yes.

“You never think anything like this will happen but it is through the goodness of other people.

“When you get massive DJs saying, ‘I would love to play for you’, it’s great. They are my heroes so it is massive for me.”
