A GRANDMOTHER who beat breast cancer is on a mission begging for funds for a charity which aims to defeat the disease.

Hilary Skinner, 67, of Mill Lane, Clanfield, was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2008, having found a lump on Boxing Day.

She was successfully treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy – and now wants to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK.

Mrs Skinner, who has managed the village shop in Filkins for three years, said: “I am living proof that there are effective treatments for breast cancer.

“Sadly, however, not everyone survives. That’s why I am supporting Cancer Research UK’s new campaign ‘Join the fight for women’s survival.’ I want to highlight the need for more research and encourage people to get involved.”

Mrs Skinner has joined forces with Asthall Farm Polo Club at Kencot, near Lechlade. Together, they hope to enlist the support of mums, dads, families, friends and work colleagues and encourage them to organise their own fundraising events.

The club has already raised more than £1,300 for the charity this year. Mrs Skinner has also held coffee mornings, raising more than £1,200 in total.

She said: “I thought it would be good for me to try to put something back, and help towards research.

“The more money that goes into it, the more people it will help.”
