A MAN was under arrest in a serious condition in hospital tonight after he was shot with a Taser gun by police.

Police said the man, in his 40s, was shot with the electric stun gun after he confronted them with a knife in Rose Hill, Oxford, at about 3am today.

They added the man had suffered a stab wound, but was not given treatment for any injuries caused by the Taser.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission was informed as a matter of course.

Police could not confirm whether the man had threatened other people or himself, or for what he had been arrested.

Oxfordshire Commander Ch Supt Brendan O’Dowda said officers were still trying to establish the full facts.

He said a neighbour called police to tell them there was a man causing a disturbance at a house in Westbury Crescent.

One Westbury Crescent neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “I have lived here for 12 to 13 years and nothing like this has happened here before.”

Sgt Alan Coffey said: “We will make sure we step up patrols in the area to provide reassurance, but it was a contained incident.”
