A 70-year-old man was fortunate to escape injury after he fell through ice on a frozen lake.

The man walked across the ice at the lake in Ardington, near Wantage, but fell in.

He managed to make his way to the side of the lake and climb out, but the air ambulance and fire crews had already been mobilised.

Watch Manager Tony Whiting said: “This is a timely reminder of the dangers of walking or playing on any ice.

"This could have been a very different story, and he is an extremely fortunate individual.

"The gentleman involved was only able to get out of the water due to a massive amount of luck as the water was quite shallow and he was very close to the edge.

"And that said he still needed to be checked over by the ambulance crew due to the risks of hypothermia."
