PEOPLE visiting Didcot’s Ladygrove Park can now walk on water, thanks to a new boardwalk constructed across the estate’s lakes.

The raised platform will let people walk across the lake, while creating a new wildlife haven for amphibians on the southern bank of the small lake.

The boardwalk will let schools and clubs use the lakes as an educational resource.

A wire mesh curtain dividing the lake will help keep the amphibian zone free from fish, which can eat their eggs and young, with floating islands and a winter refuge to sustain the animals through the year.

Didcot Town Council technical manager Brenda Andrews, who is also secretary of Ladygrove Fishing Association, said: “We’ve been talking about this for years. The fishing club isn’t just about fishing – it’s interested in the environment and the balance here.

“This will let people do pond-dipping and will be a home for amphibians.

“It’s about diversity and providing something for members of the public who aren’t interested in fishing.”

The work took three weeks and cost £17,444 from the Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment, Waste Recycling Group, Ladygrove Fishing Association, and the district and town councils.

Mayor Margaret Turner said: “When you think we’ve got this in the middle of a housing estate, it’s just wonderful.

“Everybody can come and use it. You see so many families come down here, even if it is just to feed the ducks.”
