SCHOOLBOYS are learning the complex skill of bell-ringing.

Eight pupils at Magdalen College School, in Cowley Place, Oxford, have been trying their hands at campanology.

But because the sound of novice bell-ringers can be noisy and unpleasant, the junior ringers are yet to hear the music they are making.

Instead, the bells are ‘tied’ to stop the clapper striking the bell while the schoolboys attempt to master the technique.

Head of art Fenella Pritchard, who first started bell-ringing when she was 15, started the bell-ringing club with fellow campanologist and chemistry teacher Dr David Bebbington at the beginning of term.

She said: “It is a fantastic activity, just brilliant.”

Oxford University chemistry student Claire Bell and other enthusiasts have been giving up Wednesday lunchtimes to teach the boys.
