FESTIVE film fans stepped back in time yesterday when they attended the Oxford Mail-Phoenix Picturehouse Christmas screening of this year’s hit film The Young Victoria, starring Emily Blunt.

The film was shown as part of the newspaper’s annual festival of yuletide matinees, screened specially for Oxford’s senior citizens.

And it was, as always, well received.

Jean Warren, 89, of Jericho, said: “It’s a wonderful idea. I couldn’t come last year but I was determined to be here this time round. I think everybody should come along.”

David Kirke, 64, of Headington, said: “It very much puts you in the Christmas spirit and is a perfect prelude to Christmas shopping.”

Festival-goers are also treated to a free hot chocolate and mince pie, and all for just the cost of your favourite daily paper (40p).

Today’s film, the last of the festival, is Last Chance Harvey a romantic comedy set in London and starring Academy award winners Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. The film starts at 11am.
