Sir – Fifteen per cent of journeys to work in Oxford are by bicycle. There are more than 16,000 bicycle journeys crossing Magdalen Bridge every day.

The bicycle has long since become an essential part of the economic life of this city — if we clamped down on bicycle use, the city would grind to a halt.

Over the years we have progressively made our main roads safe places to cycle, with one of the most comprehensive networks of cycle lanes and cycle-friendly junctions anywhere in the country.

But there are still gaps, still plenty for the county to address during the third Local Transport Plan (on which they are currently consulting). We should be working towards a situation where even teenage cyclists can confidently use the main roads (and not their pavements) without fear.
