Sir – I read with concern your brief report in Student homes at old bus depot, (October 29). I am even more concerned to read that Oxford Brookes University has expressed an interest in acquiring the proposed accommodation. Well, they would, wouldn’t they?
Oxford Brookes’ insatiable demand for more blocks of student accommodation in an area of dense residential housing has to be restrained.
We have a large cross section of society living in the Cowley Road area of East Oxford. Some of us have lived here for many years. We are becoming very anxious indeed about the increasing numbers of students living here, and we are beginning to feel crowded out.
We do not want to live on the edges of a student ghetto.
We think that this whole Cowley Road area has reached saturation point already in the number of students who can sensibly be housed here without destroying the balanced community in which we live.
Such an imbalance may have a serious effect on the relatively harmonious way of life we currently enjoy and we wish to prevent this happening.
Barbara Tucker (Mrs), Oxford
