Sir – Liz Fisher et al say that “A CPZ will not magically create new parking spaces” (Letters, November 26). However, it appears that car clubs can.

The recently completed first annual Oxford Car Club survey demonstrates that Commonwheeels are already an important part of the solution to parking congestion in the proposed East Oxford CPZ.

It shows that 45 Oxford residents have disposed of cars since joining the car club, and a further 33 have not bought a car they would otherwise have done.

In the last year the car club has, therefore, increased the parking spaces available in Oxford by 70 as well as reduced both residents’ motoring costs, and the environmental impact of car use and manufacture, as car club users tend to reduce their car use after joining.

If current trends continue, about 100 additional parking spaces will be freed up in Oxford in 2010, many of them in the proposed CPZ.

Commonwheels — a community interest company which reinvests any “profits” back into the car club — is expanding fast within Oxford and in collaboration with local residents, is looking to expand the fleet from eight to 20 in a way that minimises members’ costs.

We will use some of the cars that are already on Oxford’s streets and lease them from local residents (under mutually beneficial terms).

If anyone is interested to explore leasing their car, please email oxcar2@yahoo.co.uk or call on 0845 478 6396.
