Sir – The city council deserves our enthusiastic support in its zero-tolerance campaign to tackle litter in the city centre.

According to Bill Bryson’s recent CPRE report, Litterbugs: How to Deal with the Problem of Littering, the amount of litter dropped in the UK has increased by 500 per cent since the 1960s and as a nation we now spend £500m every year in trying to clean it up. It is very heartening to see that Oxford is now getting serious about stopping the thoughtless mess and saving money that can be spent far more constructively elsewhere.
