BUDDING singer Ellie Robbins narrowly missed out on being crowned one of Britain’s best young acts – but vowed to come back “stronger than ever”.

The 16-year-old, from Yarnton, near Oxford, performed in front of more than 300 fans in the national finals of Open Mic UK.

But after beating more than 8,000 other acts to make the final line-up of 10, Ellie narrowly missed out on the top spot with her rendition of Mama Do by Pixie Lott.

Last night the youngster admitted being disappointed but said the competition had made her more confident than ever.

Ellie, an A-level pupil at Marlborough School in Woodstock, said: “It was a shame not to win, but singing in front of all those people was the most amazing experience.

“This competition has made me believe in myself and my singing ability.

“I’m now going to enter lots of competitions, including X-Factor.

“The whole event has been a great opportunity for me and given me the drive to continue. I will definitely come back stronger than ever after this.”

Former Steps star Lee Latchford Evans was among the judges at Portsmouth Guildhall on Saturday. Representatives from record labels were also on hand to hear the next generation of singers.

Ellie’s mother, Vanessa Robbins, said she was proud of her daughter.

She said: “Ellie came so close to winning, and gave a really good performance.

“It must have been daunting up on stage, but you wouldn’t have known, given how well she did. We are all very proud of her and know she will be back on stage soon.”

The judges and audience voted Esther Boxell, from Somerset, as winner of the competition.

Head judge Chris Grayston said: “Each of the finalists really impressed us, which is why they were on the stage.

“Each one performed well at the regional live shows and really earned their place at the final.

“Ellie was consistent and gave a great performance on the night but just missed out on first place.

“I would encourage her to continue singing and developing and we hope to see her again in 2010.”

Open Mic UK is a national competition for singers and songwriters to compete live. Auditions start in January.
