WITNEY MP David Cameron is opening a new £1.4m school building tomorrow.

The Tory leader will join staff and pupils at Combe Primary School, Church Walk, to celebrate the new classrooms.

Children have already been making use of the new facilities, which include two new classrooms for pupils aged four to six and a school hall for PE, drama and assemblies.

Headteacher Wendy Foster said: “We are absolutely delighted with our new building and the children have settled in really nicely.

“We feel very at home in our modern surroundings and there is so much more space for learning and extra-curricular activities.

“We are getting used to daily lessons in the hall for curriculum music, singing, PE, gymnastics, dance, drama, cookery and after-school creative activities.”

The project also involved creating an outdoor learning area for the younger children.

Before the building work began, the school used a small hall as a classroom. Furniture had to be removed every day for assemblies and school lunches to take place.

Michael Waine, Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet member for schools: said: “The council is committed to providing fantastic learning opportunities for every child in the county.

“Combe already offers an outstanding standard of education for its pupils and the new buildings have created even more opportunities for the children.”

The new building includes a ground source heat pump to supply the underground heating, along with wind-catchers to provide natural ventilation in the hall.

Solar cells on one side of the roof convert light directly into electricity and the drainage system disposes of surface water within the site.

Mr Cameron will tour the school before announcing the winner of his Christmas card competition – the winning cards will be displayed on his official website.

The day will end with afternoon tea, with refreshments provided by the children.

Combe Primary School is classed by Ofsted as an outstanding school and was placed joint top of last year’s national primary league tables.
