Sir – The inauguration of the first Oxford Decorative and Fine Arts Society is indeed a cause for celebration, as is the evident quality of the first lecture (Weekend, November 19).
However, Theresa Thompson fails to mention that Oxford has had a flourishing equivalent society for almost 50 years.
I refer to the Oxford Art Society Associates of which I am the chairman. We have a large and enthusiastic membership and we meet at the Ashmolean Museum’s Headley Lecture Theatre. Whereas the Oxford Nadfas lectures are held on Wednesday mornings, we meet on Mondays in the early evening.
Our programme for 2010 includes lectures by Professor R. R. R. Smith, of Oxford University, Timothy Wilson, the Keeper of Western Art at the Ashmolean, Dr Geoffrey Tyack, the distinguished architectural historian and David Gentleman, the eminent designer. Recent activities have included visits to London exhibitions and to an historic house. Last summer we had a successful garden party. Our society is, in all but name, the Oxford Nadfas’s older twin!
