Sir – Well done to Prof Gerald Elliott and Roseanne Bostock for voicing their wishes about better concert and theatre facilities in Oxford (Letters, November 12).

For several years I have sat in uncomfortable, overcrowded buildings around Oxford trying to enjoy the wonderful music on offer. I have wondered why on earth Oxford can’t get its act together and build a modern multi-purpose venue for everyone to enjoy. Oxford seems to think that what ‘did’ 50 or 100 years ago is still OK. Well I can tell them that it isn’t!

Some of us like to get a bit dressed up, come out and have an interval drink or coffee and (maybe) look at some interesting architecture or art displays whilst we are waiting for the second half. It would also be good to have modern toilet and cloakroom facilities that didn’t involve waiting in antideluvian corridors.

If we want to encourage a younger generation to enjoy music, dance and theatre then we have to make the surroundings more amenable.

If there isn’t room in the city centre (and I can understand that this would be a tall order) why not build a venue on one of the surrounding business parks? For the green-minded, maybe there could be a shuttle bus out from the city centre bus stops? I would have thought all this would, in fact, be a money spinner.

Places like Plymouth have had a central, modern theatre for years. A proper venue in Oxford could provide a pleasant meeting point for coffee, lunch, drinks or exhibition viewing. Given the world-class reputation of Oxford, surely some funding could be made available?
