Sir – With reference to Prof Gerald Elliott’s letter (November 12), we must be careful that we get the ‘right mix’ in Oxford concerning another venue for entertainment.

His suggestion of a concert hall like St David’s Hall in Cardiff, which surely would be too massive (you cannot compare the size of the capital city of Cardiff to Oxford) and consequently taking the thunder from New Theatre, Playhouse, Town Hall, Sheldonian, Oxford Castle Stage, Holywell Music Room, etc, one of them ending up a ‘white elephant’ due to a concentration of people in one venue. I would imagine a reasonably-sized venue for Oxford for concerts, etc, together with some commercial shops (whether they be late-night ones also to fit in with the times the concert hall would be open), the right direction.

A bus and taxi station would also be necessary in the Westgate area to take people home, as the late-night buses on a Friday and Saturday serve at present, especially for those enjoying drinks at the concerts. Unfortunately the Westgate is too tucked away out the back from the rest of the main activities that are being held in the city, so there would have to be a better walking link-up with the rest of the city to bring the area more in line with what is going on centrally. And also better illuminated at night.
