The man (yes, a man) famed for boosting body confidence for women the length and breadth of Britain will be catwalking into Oxford tomorrow.

Gok Wan, the bespectacled style evangelist whose celebration of the nation’s ‘bangers’ has become a rallying cry for women everywhere (‘bangers’ by the way are breasts to you and me) will be in town to sign copies of his latest book.

However, in these recession-bleak times, it’s reassuring – and practical – to learn his new style mantra is more about giving your wardrobe a much-needed makeover than your body.

Looking every inch the people’s fashionista, the 32-year-old style guru took time out from his nationwide tour to explain.

“I think we are buying too many clothes,” he says surprisingly, “and I'm guilty of that as well. “I tell people constantly, ‘To feel good you gotta have this, this, this and this’ and 30 per cent of what I say is in women’s wardrobes already.

“So it’s about going back into your wardrobe, having a good look at what you've got, and then making it work. And if it isn’t the right cut or the right shape after you’ve found it, only then go and buy yourself another one.”

Wow. Sound advice and proof that this is the man many women now consider a god. Or, at least on a par with support pants.

Because TV’s favourite stylist is encouraging us, his Gokettes, to hone our wardrobes, rein in our spending sprees and create a capsule wardrobe for “style that lasts”.

Easier said than done? Well, according to Gok: “Nearly every girl’s wardrobe that I see is bursting with clothes that have never been worn.”

And he’s right isn’t he?

More than £5 billion worth of clothes currently lie abandoned in British wardrobes (at least that’s according to new research by WeightWatchers).

“Capsule wardrobes have been around for decades but they're hard to put together because limiting yourself and being quite disciplined is tricky with fashion - we want nice things and lots of them!” he laughs.

“So the aim is for a working wardrobe with key staples that interact with all your other pieces to create lots of different looks.”

Sounds easy enough doesn’t it? But Gok admits his capsule wardrobe isn’t for everyone.

“Some people want clothes en masse,” he says. “Others want to be on-trend every single season and then there are those who want to adopt a certain look like emo, goth or punk. The capsule wardrobe is for women who always want to look and feel stylish, whatever the season.”

So, what does he suggest?

Gok reckons the must-haves are: l A white shirt - “A true classic. Like your best friend, you can always depend on it,” says Gok.

l Jeans - “Don’t be quick to keep denims in the comfy bracket,” he suggests. “A good pair of fitting jeans are not only considered smart casual but workwear too.”

l Tailoring - “Good tailoring is a key buy because you can mix and match a suit – you don’t have to wear the bottom and top together,” he advises.

l And a mac - “You can wear it from day to night, from spring through to winter - to 2050 and beyond!” he exalts.

And according to Colin Shone, manager of Waterstones Oxford: “We’re really excited that Gok will be here tomorrow. We expect large numbers of fans to turn up to meet the flamboyant fashionista and who couldn’t do with a good makeover in the run up to Christmas?”

Gok Wan will be signing copies of Work Your Wardrobe on Saturday, November 21, at 12pm at Waterstone’s, Broad Street, Oxford.
