QUELLE surprise! Top chef Raymond Blanc celebrated his 60th birthday today with a special cake.

To mark the occasion, staff at Maison Blanc, the French patisserie in Woodstock Road, presented him with an unusual gateau.

Choux and puff pastry were combined with kirsch cream and finished with 60 mini-chocolate and vanilla éclairs.

It was presented by longest-serving team member Pascal Lavandier, who has been with Masion Blanc since it started in 1981.

Mr Blanc said: “I know there are a lot of talented people who have worked as hard as I have, but have not been as lucky as I have, and I am very privileged to have such a great team.

“I see very little difference between 10 years ago and today. Maybe I should be going fishing, but I enjoy working with people.”
