Councillor John Tanner’s hypocrisy is beyond belief.

On the subject of closing a quarter of the city’s public toilets, he was quoted as saying last December: “I can give you a cast-iron guarantee there will not be any closures next year”.

Nonetheless, the closure plan went ahead.

One month ago, Mr Tanner said: “I started off regretting these closures, but now I could think of lots of other ways of spending £50,000 a year”. Now he boasts (Oxford Mail, November 17): “I am pleased we can now grant a reprieve to some of those much-loved local toilets”.

He also says “We have listened to what people are saying`” but he has only half-listened, as only four of the seven toilets will be saved, and he still intends to go ahead with the £300,000 refurbishment of those at Gloucester Green, despite most people’s derision at this ridiculous scheme.

The public toilets in Castle Street will still be closed, even though this area is now crammed with passengers waiting to board all the buses that are lined up there.

Perhaps Mr Tanner could ask the county council to open the toilets at County Hall, which is just round the corner from Castle Street.
