CARGO nets and a zip wire are some of the new features at a playground in Childrey, near Wantage.

The £68,500 playground, in New Road, took two years of fundraising by residents to get built and involved children and parents voting on their favourite designs.

The Wren Foundation, which supports people living next to landfill sites, donated £50,000.

Additional funds were raised by villagers, the Wantage Round Table, Vale of White Horse District Council, the Childrey Welfare Trust and the Godfrey and Fettyplace Trust.

Iain Turner co-ordinator and member of the Childrey Playing Field Trust, said: “The play area was more than 25 years old and really in need of bringing up to date.

“The villagers have worked to raise funds which have been greatly aided by a successful grant application.

“Without their support the wait for a new play area would have been far longer.”

Wantage MP Ed Vaizey MP brought his family along to try the equipment.

He said: “Childrey and its surrounding villages are very fortunate to have this new play area. I am certain it will get a lot of use and I congratulate the villagers.”
