To the greengrocers’ apostrophe can now be added the drama critic’s. Writing in the Daily Telegraph on Monday Dominic Cavendish referred to “a touring adaptation of the Barry Hines’ school-syllabus staple Kes”.

The mistake, I sense, was probably inserted by a sub-editor misled by the ‘s’ at the end of Hines into thinking an apostrophe was required. We would certainly not have been told of ‘the Dominic Cavendish’ review’.

The pedant in me also bridled this week at the labelling on a packet of (excellent) hot smoked salmon bought from our local Aldi. There was, of course, the now-obligatory dietary information: “Contains fish.”

Then came the news: “Hot Smoked Salmon, unlike conventional smoked salmon, is not cold smoked but hot smoked.”

Who would have guessed it?
