FUNDING for schools is ring-fenced by Government and is therefore unaffected by Oxfordshire County Council’s proposed budget savings proposals.

However, four outdoor education centres in Oxfordshire and three out of county centres must become self-financing or face closure as part the proposals put forward by the council.

The Oxford Youth Sailing service in Farmoor, the Riverside Youth Centre at Donnington Bridge, the Hill End centre on the edge of Wytham Woods and the Oxfordshire Forest School Service, which provides outdoor lessons in 40 schools and settings across the county, would need to attract outside funding under the plans.

The council said it also needed to make unspecified savings in its Home to School transport scheme, which could lead to a reduction in concessionary fares for pupils.

The authority is also considering reducing an unspecified amount of funding for its school improvement service, although it could not provide further details on this last night.
