EXPENSES for Oxfordshire’s 74 county councillors are set to be frozen as part of the cost-cutting plan.

Basic allowances will remain at £8,026 for councillors while council leader Keith Mitchell will not see a rise in his £28,094 annual pay.

Chief executive of the Taxpayers’ Alliance Matthew Elliott said:“With the economy in recession and the public finances in a dire state, spending cuts are clearly necessary, particularly in non-essential areas like middle management.

“It’s absolutely right that councillors’ allowances are to be frozen as an immediate step. Ideally, they should really cut their allowances, to show they’re sharing the pain of the recession.”

The council has also proposed streamlining back office functions and reducing the amount of money spent on maintenance and repairs on council buildings.
