AS part of its budget overhaul, the council plans to re-invest £75m in front-line services such as social care for the elderly and for children.

Extra financial support is also being considered for carers, as well as for retained firefighters and fire stations across the county.

Last night the council said it could not provide further details on the £75m investment plan, but a spokesman said it would consult with councillors and the groups involved to decide which money should go where.

The cash injection will be offset by unspecified savings, which the council plans to make in adult social care and day services provision.

The council also said it planned to save money by redirecting consumer advice service calls to national advice services.

Council leader Keith Mitchell said: “We have been using this as an opportunity to re-evaluate radically how we work and strip out the things we don’t need.”
