Sir – In response to Bruce Ross-Smith’s criticism of my letter (October 22), of course I was indulging in historical speculation! I have never pretended to be an expert — perhaps I’ve been watching too much Ben Hur!? The point I was making though is a valid one.

Even if you don’t accept the importance of Jesus as a spiritual figure, you must accept his importance as a historical figure and for this, if for nothing else, he deserves a certain degree of respect.
