Sir – I have been troubled recently by the construction of an electronic information sign on the A44 approaching Oxford. One of several, I believe.

The vital information so far displayed favours three messages: l “For Oxford use P&R” — Assuming this means park-and-ride, the new display is situated a short distance ahead of the existing sign adequately directing me to two local “P&R”s, should I need one.

l “Remember to wear your seatbelt” — Useful information of course, however, I am sure for anyone stubborn enough to travel in a car without belting up, an illuminated sign will not change their mind.

l “Give cyclists extra room in the dark” — The safety of cyclists is important to me, but we should bear in mind this stretch of road has a dedicated cycle lane, separated from the road by a generous grass verge. They are probably safe enough.

Whilst private individuals are free to waste their money as they wish, I feel frustrated when it is public money being squandered.

This comes out of my pocket . . . and yours.
