Regarding your article regarding the dangerous 20mph speed limit (Oxford Mail, October 19), I would like to say how refreshing it was to read an artcle that contained pure common sense and logic.

I for one have always kept to the speed limits wherever I have driven and supported the issue regarding lower speed limits on side roads. But can I say that I was very surprised by the stupid decision to impose a low speed limit on the city’s arterial roads. This policy has been ill-thought out. But I suppose it’s what we have come to expect after many years of bungling and incompetence by our councils.

I have always seen myself as law abiding, having held a driving licence for 42 years without mishap.

But I know now that it is only a matter of time before my licence gains points.

It is so very very easy to creep up to 25 mph on wide traffic free roads unless you drive in second or third gear.

I have noticed that I am now spending more time looking at what speed I am driving when I should be looking where I am going. Now that cannot be safe.

Our councils contain members who are imposing their own personal ideals and beliefs on us and they need weeding out before we all revert back to the horse and cart.
