A MAN is recovering in hospital after cutting off his own penis.

Police and paramedics were called to a house in Wantage, after a man dialled 999 and said: “Help me – I’m bleeding to death”.

Paramedics discovered a man in his 50s suffering serious bleeding and his severed penis in the bath.

The man was taken by ambulance to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford in a serious but not life-threatening condition.

A hospital spokesman said the man last night remained in a stable condition, but refused to comment on whether surgeons had successfully managed to re-attach his organ.

Thames Valley Police spokesman Claire Gourlay said: “Police were called by the ambulance service to a property in Wantage, at 2.15am on June 18.

“A man had allegedly harmed himself with what was believed to be a knife.

“The police attended, and the man was taken by paramedics to the John Radcliffe Hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening.”

Alison Brumfitt, a spokesman for the South Central Ambulance Service, said paramedics waited for police back-up because the patient was drunk and a sharp blade or knife had been used.

However, Thames Valley Police said it was not investigating any crime.

Neighbours said they were woken by the emergency services, but none of the residents had been told what had happened.

A local mother, who would not be named, said: “I was woken up by vehicles right outside my house.

“I thought it was the neighbours going on holiday.

“But when I looked out the window I saw two ambulances and two police cars.

“They seemed to be lost and did not know where they were going, but that is quite normal because it is not an easy road.

“I asked if they were lost and they said everything is fine. Minutes later they left.

“No-one knows anything about what happened.”

A pensioner, who asked not to be named, said: “There have been some horrible rumours going round about this and that. I won’t listen to any of them.

“He is a lovely man, very shy and very artistic.”
