OXFORD Brookes has finished 81 places above Oxford University in a green league of Britain’s universities.

Oxford Brookes finished third in a table created to measure the environmental performance of each university. Oxford’s older university finished 84th out of 127 listed.

The league was compiled by People and Planet, a student campaigning network, based in Union Street, Oxford.

Spokesman Richard Roaf said: “Shockingly, some of the universities most respected for their research and teaching on sustainability and climate change, are still laggards when it comes to improving their own environmental performance.”

The table shows that Oxford University scored badly on water consumption, just as a major project was being completed to put water tanks underground at the University Parks, to collect rainwater.

Brookes’ vice-chancellor Janet Beer said: “We have been at the forefront of environmental initiatives, which have now been adopted at many other universities.”

The table was topped by Nottingham Trent University, with the London School of Economics second.
