ALMOST 400 school children put on their walking shoes yesterday in an attempt to beat a record.

The 391 pupils, from The Blake Primary School, in Cogges Hill Road, Witney, walked in a crocodile of twos, for 500m around the school grounds.

They joined more than 100,000 children on Wednesday to try to get into the Guinness Book of Records for the largest walking bus. The record currently stands at 57,000.

Teacher Rowena Martin said: “Everyone was so excited – hopefully we will do it again next year.”

The national event was organised by road safety charity Brake to raise awareness of traffic around schools.

Before the walk began, children said a prayer for all of those who had died on Britain’s roads.

The school’s walk was independently checked, and the names of all the pupils who took part have to be sent in. It could be several weeks before they find out if they helped to break the record and will feature in the record book in 2010 for mass participation.
