Congratulations to K Jackson of Banbury (Oxford Mail letters, April 6) for expressing the view that we do not want to see the county become one big landfill site.

Instead we should have an incinerator, which will result in highly toxic ash from the incineration being buried in pits.

These pits will be in very close proximity to the Thames if the incinerator is built at Sutton Courtenay and thus we can pollute the river system as well as the land.

And we can also pollute the air with airborne waste.

Incinerators of the type proposed by the Waste Recycling Group have already been closed down in the USA on health grounds.

Of course our county shouldn’t be one big landfill site, but under the proposals from WRG, 25 per cent of the rubbish to be incinerated will come from outside the county (Reading, West Berkshire, Wokingham and Bracknell). All of this ‘out of county’ waste will be brought in by hundreds of lorry journeys each week.

So instead of becoming one huge landfill site, Oxfordshire could become one huge road network for lorries feeding our incinerator.

Incineration is the most expensive method of waste disposal, but the most profitable for the operators.

There are viable alternatives and councils that have fully researched waste disposal have rejected the incineration option. OCC should reject building an incinerator.
