Sir – May I, through your columns, remind readers of the city wide clean-up event, Spring Clean 2009, to take place on March 6 and 7, under the auspices of OxClean?

OxClean is an initiative between the Oxford Civic Society and Oxford City Council. Spring Clean 2008 was a huge success: some 1,500 people in 98 groups turned out and collected litter equivalent to 700 household collections, plus 3,000 kg of scrap. This year, to date, 70 groups have registered and we anticipate an even more successful event.

Readers are urged to join in, either as individuals tackling city ‘grotspots’ in groups set up by OxClean or in their own groups. Full details are available at oxclean.org.uk and the organisers of the event will give guidance and instruction. Alternatively phone the OxClean hotline 07505 756 692.

Groups have registered to clean up throughout the city, including the canalside and the River Thames – very welcome given the current focus on the city’s waterways (Report, February 5).
