Police are appealing for witnesses and urging the public to be vigilant after at least 11 cars cars were broken into at Port Meadow, Oxford.

Between 6pm last night and 9am today at least 11 cars were broken into while they were parked in the car park at Port Meadow, at the bottom of Walton Well Road.

PC Fran Whyte said: “I appeal to anyone who could have seen suspicious activity in the area last night, to contact me.

“On each occasion the passenger window of the car was smashed and the thieves searched inside, stealing a variety of items.

“There has never been a series like this before in this car park, so I hope that this is just a one off but would like to take this opportunity to offer motorists, the following advice: When leaving your car unattended please take time to ensure the following

  • Always lock and secure and never leave keys in vehicle
  • Never leave valuable property on display, like sat-navs, laptop computers, cash.
  • Park with care. Park in busy well lit streets or near CCTV cameras where possible
  • Never leave car documents in the vehicle
  • Never leave vehicle keys on view or near the front door of your home, thieves do break into houses in order to obtain the keys and then steal the car.
