Sir — In a classic case of 'land-grab' (September 18) for 'lebensraum', the Oxford City Council proposes to extend its boundaries in order to build thousands of houses in the Green Belt — which was established specifically to protect Oxford and its surroundings.
Rather than attempting to cater for an insatiable demand for houses by building in the Green Belt and in the South Oxfordshire District Council area, the Oxford City Council would do better to concentrate on maintaining, improving and enhancing its own territory and on declaring the city a no-growth area.
Many believe Oxford has enough shops, offices and traffic as it is, and, if its international reputation and special character is to be kept intact, then a stop must be made on major development and expansion.
