David Manners, The wrong approach (Oxford Mail, August 12), appears to have misunderstood the Health and Safety Executive's role.

As I previously explained, the HSE was informed of the building collapse in Iffley Road, Oxford.

However, Oxford City Council's building control department and its structural engineers are the lead organisation and experts in stabilising the structure.

The HSE would not have had access until they deemed the site safe.

The HSE and building control have been liaising with the contractor to manage access to the building and plan the safe removal of the debris.

It is only once this debris is removed that the cause of the collapse can hopefully be determined.

The HSE and local authorities are doing a great deal of work, frequently in close partnership with businesses, trade unions and other bodies, to help reduce the toll of incidents, injuries and ill-health.

More needs to be done to prevent the needless loss of life of people going to work.

The HSE will continue to do its part by prioritising its resources to where they are most needed and appropriate.
