A Witney care home has teamed up with nursery children to save traditional recipes from being forgotten.

Residents at Millers Grange have been teaching children from St Hugh of Lincoln Nursery School their favourite recipes.

They prepared a ‘Brum Special’, a beloved recipe of a resident which is similar to crispy cakes, consisting of melted chocolate, rice krispies, butter, dates, raisins and demerara sugar.

Millers Grange resident, Eileen Oddy, said: "This became a family recipe after a friend from Birmingham introduced it to my daughter while at school."

She added her daughter "has fond memories of making it at home with me".

Home manager Alison Parry said: "Regardless of age, food plays an important part in all of our lives, and there's something special about the way the senses have the ability to evoke happy memories and emotions.

"Everyone had a great time talking about their favourite foods – and seeing the children try the 'Brum Special' was certainly the cherry on the cake."

A survey carried out by Millers Grange's operators, Care UK, found that 65 per cent of people no longer use family recipes, but 43 per cent are eager to preserve them.

The company has launched a free downloadable recipe book, Recipes to remember, which features recipes shared by care home residents, including World War Two meals and desserts from the 1970s.

The book can be downloaded from the Care UK website.
