As the busy Easter bank holiday approaches, residents in Oxfordshire are being reminded of how to use NHS services most effectively.

Dr Rachael de Caux, chief medical officer from the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire West Integrated Care Board, said: "Bank holidays are a busy time for the NHS.

"If you need support or medical assistance, our local health and care professionals want you to get the right help, at the right time, in the right place.

"All you need to know is which service best suits your needs.

"Remember, 999 and emergency departments are for emergency, life-threatening illnesses only."

People have been advised that if they are in need of health advice but are unsure where to turn, they should contact NHS 111 online or by phone.

Dr de Caux added: "And please remember NHS 111 can also direct you to urgent mental health support and emergency dental treatment.”

Members of the public can assist the NHS during the busy bank holiday period by collecting repeat prescriptions in advance, being ready to take family or loved ones home from hospital when they are medically cleared, and using pharmacies for minor health issues.

Some pharmacists may even be able to prescribe certain medications without a GP prescription, and they can help with a range of minor health issues including colds, skin problems and earaches.
