An Oxfordshire woman who turned 100 this week has recalled the time she survived a post office robbery.
Kay Law lives in Wantage and celebrated reaching triple figures on Tuesday (March 19) with her family, friends and fellow residents at Betjeman Court.
Described as a lively and humorous character by long-time friend Ann Brown, the 100-year-old’s life has been far from uneventful.
The pair met when working together in the Wantage Cancer Research shop 20 years ago and it didn’t take long for the pair to start swapping stories.
“She worked in a post office in Swindon in the 1960s and one day there was a robbery while she was working,” said Ann.
“The staff hid behind the counter and the robbers smashed the glass, which was quite frightening.
“She has told me a few times about it and said they were laughing even though they were scared which sums up the type of person Kay is.
“Kay looked danger in the face and found it funny especially afterwards.”
Kay, who lived in Swindon before moving to Wantage, also loves to travel and is even booked to go abroad again later this year.
“She used to travel across the world with her husband and went to lots of places in America,” said Ann.
“France was another popular destination for them and she really liked going abroad and still does.
“She is going to France with her son David this summer which she’s very looking forward to.”
Kay’s birthday celebrations extended to the weekend when she went to watch her beloved Swindon Town play Doncaster Rovers.
“She went to the football match at the weekend and she was made a fuss of,” revealed Ann.
“Kay met lots of the older players as well as the man-of-the-match on the day which she really enjoyed.
“She was even given Champagne with the football club written on it which was a nice gesture.
“Swindon has been her team for years as she lived there for a long time.”
Kay’s 78-year-old best friend Ann also noted how outgoing Kay is even at her age and her appreciation for a drink.
“She is a wonderful and very fashionable woman with a great sense of humour,” she added.
“She likes to drink and she will have anything but especially likes red wine.
“Kay loves going to the theatre and the cinema and still goes out for meals at her age which is wonderful.
“I used to see her once a week but my husband is disabled now so we don’t see each other as much but we always try for once a month.”
