A history re-enacting group has presented a £100 donation to the RNLI in the charity's 200th year.

The Oxfordshire Home Guard Living History Group raised the donation amount through their frequent displays at country shows and public events.

Witney resident Dave Thompson, who is the local RNLI chair, said: "We're very thankful.

"The sum has tipped us over £1,600 for this year alone, well on the way to beating the 2023 figure of £6,000."

Home Guard Group member Margaret Metcalfe said: "Since our formation 10 years ago we have been involved in re-enacting what would have happened in real life during the second world war.

"This includes drill and displaying the kind of weapons that were available to the Home Guard during the conflict, particularly in the event of the widely expected airborne invasion.

"We also are involved in trying to educate our younger generation about the Home Guard's role by doing talks in schools - which is somewhat different to that portrayed in the comedy series Dad's Army."

Other beneficiaries of their "Spitfire Fund" include military veterans' organisations and the Air Ambulance.

The group's forthcoming events include the Bicester Heritage Scramble on April 21, Tilford Village at War on May 11 and 12, and Windsor Castle at War on May 26 and 27.
