A flood alert has been issued for the River Thames and its tributaries in Oxford.

Following rainfall today, the Environment Agency has issued an alert after a rise in river levels on the Bullstake Stream and Seacourt Stream.

The alert warns of possible flooding of low-lying land and roads later this evening (March 12), especially in the New Botley area and areas around the Seacourt Stream.

The weather forecast today is for further rain, some of which could be heavy, the alert adds.

Although tomorrow (March 13) is forecast to be mostly dry, the Environment Agency still expect river levels to continue to rise through today and overnight in response to recent rainfall.

The alert states: “We are closely monitoring the situation.

“Avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses.

“Go to the 'River and Sea levels in England' webpage for current river levels.”

The alert page is due to be updated tomorrow morning or as the situation changes.

There are also alerts in place for the River Cherwell from Lower Heyford down to and including Oxford as well as the River Ray and its tributaries from Shipton to and including Islip.

Residents are urged to sign up for flooding warnings on the Government UK website, call Floodline on 0345 988 1188 or follow @EnvAgency on Twitter/X for the latest flood updates

The alerts come after bouts of flooding across February which saw businesses close and homes evacuated.
