Two vacant seats on an Oxfordshire town council have been filled after two former councillors resigned on the same day.

Christine Sandall and Len Pannett have been elected to Wallingford Town Council, following yesterday's election.

The election saw three candidates vying for two vacancies, with the results shared by Mayor for Wallingford Councillor Dan Beauchamp.

Christine Sandall received 465 votes, with Len Pannett receiving 395. Nigel Everett, who was also standing, lost out with 140 votes.

Turnout for the election was 8.9 per cent of an electorate of 6451, with 576 ballot papers issued. None were rejected.

Mr Beauchamp said: "Congratulations to both Leonard Pannett and Christine Sandall and commiserations to Nigel Everett. Thank you all for standing. I know it can be daunting standing in an election but without all three of you we wouldn't have had a choice.

"I know there are observations regarding turn out and the causes and we will be diving in to that but for now I want to leave the focus on the succesful candidates. Welcome to the Wallingford Town Council team, I look forward to working with you both."

A hustings event was held in Wallingford Market Place last Saturday (February 17), where all three candidates spoke with town residents and members of the public.

Ms Sandall and Mr Pannett will replace former councillors Stephen Beatty and Paul Gibbon tendered their resignations on Tuesday (December 12), citing personal reasons.
