Villagers have rubbished controversial plans unveiled this week for a £100m incinerator on their doorstep.

Waste Recycling Group, which operates the landfill site in Sutton Courtenay, put its proposals on display at the village hall, in Hobbyhorse Lane, yesterday and today.

Scores of villagers inspected the plans, which the company will submit to Oxfordshire County Council for consideration on Monday.

Spanish-owned WRG is in the running alongside Viridor, which runs the other major landfill site in Oxfordshire at Ardley, near Bicester, to build the incinerator in Oxfordshire.

Included in WRG's plans is an incinerator capable of burning at least 300,000 tonnes of waste a year, an ash recycling plant, air pollution control, and buildings for offices and visitors.

Callum MacKenzie, 53, of Drayton Road, is a member of the Sutton Courtenay Renewable Energy Group, which wants to put up a wind turbine to provide power for the community.

He said: "It's ridiculous. I have a young son in the village and I don't want him breathing in this stuff.

"We should be building a wind turbine, not an incinerator. It discourages councils to recycle and we believe the dioxins that are given out will be cancerous."

Tony Curran, 74, of Tyrell's Way, was resigned to an incinerator on his doorstep.

He said: "We aren't going to stop it. But we are going to have all the air coming over us and there is going to be smell and fumes.

"It's just going to pollute this area with someone else's rubbish. The village gets nothing from it."

WRG senior development manager Paul Green said: "It's a fantastic site. We're confident about getting permission but not complacent.

"We've done a lot of consultation with local residents and we believe it offers an excellent solution."

The county council will make the final decision early next year.
