Two people were rescued from a burning house following a suspected arson this morning.

Firefighters were called to a fire in a house in Marlborough Place, Banbury, at 1am after poisonous smoke activated the smoke alarms.

Two men were rescued from the blaze by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus who led them out of the house from upstairs bedrooms.

Two women had already fled the burning home before crews arrived.

Fire investigators have reported the blaze to police believing the cause to be suspicious.

Banbury fire station manager Grahame Mitchell said: "Had there not been an early alert to the fire and the property been without smoke detectors, the outcome could undoubtedly have ended in tragedy."

Scenes of crime officers are currently at the scene carrying out an investigation.

A 29-year-old woman is in police custody having been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
