Sir - After a man has got away with a fine less than the cost of his bike for dangerous cycling causing death, I wish to add comment.

One recent afternoon, I walked down Keble Road and turned the blind corner left into St Giles - all on the pavement. A woman speeding north along the pavement on a heavy mountain bike hurtled straight into me. Yet there are bicycle lanes either side of that road. Since she did not intend it, she argued that I should not complain. I endured days of pain and risked long-term injury for which I have medical backing. This cyclist was utterly indifferent to the illegality of cycling on pavements. When cyclists feel the road is dangerous, they should revert to walking like pedestrians when on pavements.
