Powerstation bosses are celebrating an award for educating the public about energy.

RWE npower, the company which owns Didcot power station, picked up a Big Tick award for its Energy to Live, Energy to Learn scheme.

It was awarded by Business in the Community, to companies who demonstrate excellence in their business practice and can show a positive impact on society and on the business.

John Rainford, Didcot A power station manager, said: "It's essential that we encourage young people to look at science, technology and engineering and feel excited about working in those sectors. From school visits to staff mentoring and apprenticeships, we always actively try to be a part of the community in which we operate, and contribute not only money but time, knowledge and expertise."

The firm runs an education centre at Didcot and a range of programmes for pupils aged between eight and 18. Last year, almost 5,000 children from 176 schools toured the power station.

It also offers older pupils work experience, an apprenticeship scheme, and an Enthuse programme, exploring engineering and science.

Eight Enthuse events were held in Didcot schools last year.
