Sir - Bill Bradshaw's letter claiming that the number of buses using the High Street has not increased (Letters, July 11) is not true.
During my time as a county councillor it was freely conceded by officers and councillors of all parties that the numbers had increased and subsequently I met with the two bus companies who also conceded that the numbers had increased.
Indeed the very fact that the buses were taken out of Cornmarket Street via the Oxford Transport Strategy meant their displacement into the High.
Prior to the meeting I carried out several surveys of my own and found that at peak, 160-180 buses an hour passed Queens Lane.
I have also pointed out both privately and publicly that the High is now used as the main crew changeover point and is used for minor repairs. In short the High is now used as a bus garage.
Lastly, Mr Bradshaw concedes that a package of improvements needs to be implemented, in spite of his earlier claims that all is well and then heaps blame on the Conservative-controlled county council. I am no Conservative but that is a most unfair criticism.
The High Street is in a mess because of the Oxford Transport Strategy.
During his time as a county councillor, Mr Bradshaw and his fellow Liberal councillors on the county council were the most foremost advocates of that flawed strategy. In short he is one of the major causes of the desecration of the High.
